The 1982 Ivan Velan Award for “outstanding contribution to Canadian Racquetball” was presented to Wayne Jeffery of Burnaby at this year’s Awards Banquet in Windsor, May 21. The award is presented annually to a person who is deemed to have made a significant contribution to Racquetball in Canada. Wayne’s chairmanship of CRA’s National Tournament Committee and CRA’s new Recreation COmmittee as well as his work in B.C. on Tournaments and Officiating were the major factors in his receiving the award.

Wayne Jeffery was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, where he played hockey and football in high school. he went on to the University of Alberta, and played on a College Bowl Golden Bears team before a knee injury ended his football career. Wayne earned a B.Sc. in Pharmacy in ’68 and his Master of Science in Pharmacy in ’70, then joined the RCMP’s Crime Lab in 1970 as a Forensic Toxicologist. He took up Racquetball in Edmonton in 1975 before moving to Burnaby in 1976. Wayne became involved with the BCRA in 1978, and served in many capacities, including Secretary, Membership Director, Referee-in-Chief and is now BCRA’s representative to the CRA’s Board of Directors. Wayne is a hard worker for the cause of Racquetball and has served as National Tournament Chairman since November 1980 and Recreation Committee Chairman since November 1982.

Vancouver’s “Quincy” plays Senior Singles and even wins a few trophies in Senior Doubles with partner Frank Echols. Wayne lives in Burnaby, B.C. with wife Dorothy (1981 recipient of the Ivan Velan Award, and CRA’s Ranking Co-chairperson) and daughter Barbara. Wayne also enjoys downhill and X-country skiing, camping, fishing, and is renewing his hockey career this winter.
