Canada Plays for Gold

The Men’s Team representing Canada at the 2024 World Championships has advanced to Saturdays final in the Team Competition, where they will meet the United States. Canada took out the Mexico, the number two seeded team and Bolivia, the third seed on their path to the final.

The Team Competition is a best of 3 series of matches, which consists of 2 singles matches and 1 doubles match. Coby Iwaasa (Lethbridge) and Samuel Murray (Baie-Comeau) were the members of the world championship men’s team who were tapped to play for Canada in the event.

Canada defeated Korea in the round of 16 on Thursday evening to advance to Friday’s quarterfinal against Bolivia. It was not an easy start of Canada with Samuel Murray having to dig deep to score a win in a tiebreaker match against Carlos Keller. Coby Iwaasa then faced Conrrado Moscoso but wasn’t able to come up to a win and Canada needed to win the doubles match to win. Fortunately for Team Canada, they powered through the match, winning against Moscoso and Kadim Carrasco in 3 games.

In the semifinal, Canada faced Mexico in a series of challenging matches. Murray played first against Javier Mar, with the Mexican winning in three games. Iwaasa and Murray then faced Andree Parrilla and Eduardo Portillo in doubles in a match that they were easily on control of after losing the first game. Iwaasa then was pitted against Parrilla in match that he won 12-10 in the tie-breaker.

The Women’s Team advanced to the quarterfinal after a win over Ecuador on Thursday evening and faced the top seeded team from Mexico on Friday. Danielle Ramsay was first up for Canada in her singles match against Montserrat Mejia, but wasn’t able to come up with a win. Next in, what we think was in the women’s match of the day, Canada’s Frédérique Lambert upset Paola Longoria in 4 games, pushing Mexico to the 3rd match. Lambert and Parent then met Mejia and Alexandra Herrera in the deciding doubles match, with the team from Mexico winning in 3 games.
