Team Canada Out of Medal Round at World Championships

GUATEMALA CITY, December 5, 2021 – Team Canada is out of the medal round at the 2021 World Championships being held in Guatemala City, Guatemala. The best opportunity for Team Canada was in the men’s and women’s doubles but both teams lost Saturday in their quarterfinal matches.

Samuel Murray of Baie-Comeau and Coby Iwaasa of Lethbridge faced Conrrado Moscoso and Roland Keller of Bolivia in their quarterfinal match. Murray and Iwaasa defeated the Bolivian team in a tight match earlier in the week in the preliminary round but Saturday’s match went to Moscoso and Keller. The Canadian team came out strong in the first game, winning 15-9 and were edging towards a win, but ended up losing the next two games, 15-12, 11-4.

Frédérique Lambert of Montréal and Alexis Iwaasa of Lethbridge played a seasoned team from Argentina in their quarterfinal. Valeria Centella and Natalia Mendez were too strong for the Canadians, winning 15-3, 15-4.

Michèle Morissette of Baie-Comeau is still playing in the consolation round in women’s singles. Normally there are no consolation matches at the World Championships, but with this tournament being a qualifying event for the World Games athletes have continued to compete in order to determine ranking.

Play at the Junior World Championships is underway with Sunday being the third day of the preliminary round. The medal round will begin on December 7th with the finals being played on December 11th, 2021.
