Canada Wins Four Medals at World Junior Racquetball Championships

Winnipeg, November 12, 2018 – Canadian athletes are bringing home four medals from the 2018 International Racquetball Federation World Junior Championships held in San Luis Potosi, Mexico.

Juliette Parent of Saint-Jacques de Montcalm, QC and Cassie Prentice of Macrorie, SK won silver in the U16 Girl’s Doubles event, defeating several strong teams along the way. To advance to the final, the team had a solid win in their semi-final against Mexico, winning 15-8, 15-12. Mexico is one of the dominant nations in the sport.

The team faced a very strong team from Bolivia in Saturday’s final, losing 15-8, 15-7. In both games, the Bolivian team scored several quick points but Parent and Prentice fought back. They did well, especially considering both members of the Bolivian team also won their singles divisions at this World Junior Championships and one of the two was a member of the team that recently won the World Championship Women’s Doubles title.

Team Canada also won three bronze medals in doubles events.

Alexis Iwaasa of Sylvan Lake, AB and Marjolaine Parent of Saint-Jacques de Montcalm, QC won bronze in the U18 Girl’s Doubles.

Ian Frattinger of Martensville, SK and Sean Sauvé of L’Assomption, QC won bronze in the U16 Boy’s Doubles, improving on their 5th place result from last year.

In their first year of competition at the World Junior Championships, Ofelia Wilscam and Tamara Wilscam won bronze in the U14 Girl’s Doubles.

In the team standings, the Canadian girls team finished in fourth place and the boys team was sixth. This gave Canada a combined fourth place finish at the tournament, which is one place higher than in 2017.

The World Junior Championships got underway Sunday, November 4 and concluded Saturday, November 10. The team was coached by Michel Gagnon of Montréal, QC, Rino Langelier of Brossard, QC and Corey Osborne of Penetanguishene, ON.

The next major event for several of the athletes competing at the World Junior Championships will be the Racquetball Canada National Team Selection Event being held in Valleyfield, QC from November 23 to 25. Tournament results are part of the criteria used to select Canada’s team for the 2019 Pan Am Championships and the 2019 Lima Pan Am Games.
