WINNIPEG, SEPTEMBER 15, 2021 – Canada’s elite racquetball athletes will be in Brossard, QC this coming weekend for Racquetball Canada’s Open Division National Championships. The event, which runs from September 16 to 19, marks the first national level competition held since February 2020.
The National Championships are always the ultimate competition of the racquetball season in Canada, but this year there will be more on the line than usual. With the cancellation of all of last season’s events, the championships will serve as the only tournament used to determine selection to national teams and the teams that will represent Canada at the upcoming World Championships and Pan Am Championships.
Typically the National Championships also include several age and skill categories, however current restrictions and safety protocols have kept the number of participants to a minimum. Racquetball Canada will be holding Western and Eastern National Championship events to facilitate a safer return to sport for those who play in those categories.
All of Canada’s top athletes have entered the tournament including Québec’s Samuel Murray and Frédérique Lambert. Murray is the only athlete to have competed in the past year, and is currently ranked 4th on the International Racquetball Tour (IRT) and Lambert is the top Canadian women’s athlete. Coby Iwaasa of Lethbridge, Christine (Richardson) Keay of Winnipeg and Michèle Morissette of Baie Comeau all are national team veterans with potential to take a run a top spots.
