Wayne Bowes & Bob Daku

Wayne Bowes and Bob Daku are widely regarded as one of the most dominant and prolific doubles teams in Canadian racquetball history. Together, they defined what it meant to play doubles racquetball in Canada, setting a standard that remains unmatched.

As individual athletes, Wayne and Bob were fierce competitors. But as a team, they were virtually unstoppable. Between 1974 and 1986, they captured an astounding nine consecutive national doubles titles—eleven in total—cementing their place as legends of the sport. Their dominance extended well beyond the national stage, with numerous Alberta provincial titles and a notable appearance at the 1974 World Amateur Racquetball Championships.

What makes their achievements even more remarkable is the era in which they competed—a time marked by high-caliber competition and a rapidly evolving sport. Yet Wayne and Bob consistently outclassed their opponents through a combination of precision, power, and tactical brilliance.

Their playing styles perfectly complemented one another—Wayne brought quiet determination and control, while Bob played with fierce intensity and energy. Their on-court chemistry was exceptional; they moved in sync, communicated effortlessly, and anticipated each other’s plays with uncanny accuracy. It was this rare synergy that made them one of the most formidable and respected teams the sport has ever seen.

Beyond their incredible success on the court, Wayne and Bob were also known for their exemplary sportsmanship, humility, and love for the game. They were true ambassadors for racquetball—respected by peers, admired by younger athletes, and instrumental in inspiring future generations.

Their contributions to the sport have been recognized through several honours. The duo was inducted into the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame in 1989 and the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 1993. Wayne Bowes was also individually inducted into the Edmonton Sports Hall of Fame in 1996.

While best known as a team, both Wayne and Bob were also accomplished singles players. Notably, Wayne won the USA Open Racquetball Championships in 1975, along with Canadian singles titles that further showcased his individual talent.
